June 2014 vineyard update looking at our Nebbiolo and Sangiovese
Rosa d'Oro 2012 Sangiovese
Score: 92 points, editor's choice
A true Sangiovese with texture, structure and tannin. Ample fruit and savory components begin in the aroma and spread out on the palate. It tastes dry, medium-bodied and mouthwatering in a way that is flavorful yet holds a bit of itself in reserve. Made from 77% Amador County grapes, with the rest from Yolo and Lake. Enjoy through 2017.

Rosa d'Oro 2012 Barbera
Score: 91 points, editor's choice
This has a vivid, ripe, black cherry flavor, with fresh sweetness and bursting acidity. It makes for a gorgeous, generous character buoyed up by firm tannins, a lively texture and finish, and no noticeable oak. A great find from a small, ambitious Lake County winery that loves Italian varietals.
— J.G. (11/1/2014
Score: 90 points
Very well structured and richly textured, this is a serious red for a special occasion. It has a deep, smoky red color, slightly herbaceous and mineral aromas, generous cherry and raspberry flavors, full body and lots of fine tannins to give a soft bite on the palate. Made from 50% Tinta Roriz, 35% Carmenère, 15% Cabernet Franc.

Score: 90 points
From a tiny winery in Lake County, over Mount St. Helena from Napa Valley, comes this mouthfilling, bold and fruit-packed red blend. It tastes rich and ripe, with deep plum and boysenberry and light herbal flavors. Medium to full-bodied and smooth-textured, it is structured with enough tannin for good balance. Winemaker Pietro Buttita says he didn’t fine or filter it.

Rosa d'Oro 2012 Muscat
From both Muscat Canelli (65%) and Muscat Giallo (35%), this fragrant and inviting wine is exactly what it proclaims to be, slightly sweet in honeysuckle, citrus and crisp texture. It offers lightness and lingering acidity in a moderate-alcohol package. — V.B.
Rosa d'Oro 2012 Nebbiolo
Bright in cherry and cranberry, this classically styled Nebbiolo is light red in color and buoyant in acidity. A sanguine back layer brings the earthier elements of the wine to life. With not much Nebbiolo to try in California, this one is worth a taste to savor the possibilities. — V.B.
Rosa d'Oro 2012 Refosco
Score: 89 points
Ripe aromas, complex flavors and rich tannins add up to a bold and full-bodied wine. It smells like dried plums, tastes almost like blackberry syrup (but not sweet) and has intriguing black pepper and floral accents. Very deep in color, it is tannic but smooth. The generous fruit lingers on the finish.

Rosa d'Oro 2011 Cabernet Franc
A rare, 100% California Cabernet Franc, this wine pays tribute to its varietal in every way. Green-olive herbaceousness integrates with savory, bright red fruit and a soft texture. Given this structure, the wine should do well alongside a peppercorn steak. — V.B.
Rosa d'Oro 2011 Primitivo
A zesty, warm dark plum Primitivo rich in leathery coffee and jam and nestled in a wall of finely structured tannins. This is the kind of wine one can describe as having nice legs. — V.B.
Rosa d'Oro 2009 Barbera
A deep, dark, robust Lake County Barbera, tame by Barbera standards, with softened tannins but lots of black licorice, fruit—rustic plum, mostly—and a hint of baked bread. Worth a try with meaty pasta dishes. — V.B.
Rosa d'Oro 2012 Montepulciano
Dark, rustic and plummy with layers of earthy meat and licorice, this medium-bodied wine is sourced from Tracy Hills and Lake County. Smoothly textured it’s ready to go with cured meats and cheese. — V.B.
